Top prize at Deauville film fest for 'Mother and Child'

"Mother and Child" by Rodrigo Garcia scooped the top prize at the 36th Deauville American Film Festival Saturday for its look at how adoption affects the lives of three women.

The jury, headed by Emmanuelle Beart, chose the drama from a field of 12 films, including eight which premiered in the French seaside resort.

"Mother and Child" follows three women who are confronted with key choices in their lives and whose destinies cross unexpectedly.

Annette Benning plays Karen, who at fourteen became pregnant and was forced to give the baby up for adoption.

Thirty-five years later her daughter Elizabeth, played by Naomi Watts, is a successful lawyer who only tries to trace her biological mother when she is expecting a baby.

Kerry Washington plays Lucy, who finally sees her dream of adopting a child finally come true.
