"The Impossible" breaks $100 M mark in foreign box office


Summit Entertainment -Mediaset Espana’s production of The Impossible, distributed overseas by Lionsgate, has crossed the $100-million foreign gross mark ($106 million). Director Juan Antonio Bayona’s tsunami disaster epic costarring Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor drew $7.9 million on the weekend at some 2,700 venues in in 47 territories highlighted by a $1.9 million opening round in South Korea.

NAOMI WATTS' critically-acclaimed drama THE IMPOSSIBLE has failed to break THE HOBBIT's hold on the national box office as PETER JACKSON's fantasy epic held on to the number one spot for a fourth consecutive weekend.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which stars Sir Ian McKellen and Martin Freeman, raked in a further £4.1 million over the weekend (05-06Jan13), bringing its domestic gross total to £44.9 million since its release date last year (Dec12).

Tsunami movie The Impossible, which recently won Watts a coveted Golden Globe nomination, failed to overtake The Lord of the Rings prequel, scoring second place with £4 million in its opening weekend.

Ang Lee's acclaimed Life Of Pi was knocked into third place with takings of £3.4 million, while Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut Quartet, starring Dame Maggie Smith and Billy Connolly, settled for fourth after earning £2.3 million in its opening weekend.

The top five is rounded out by Tom Cruise's latest blockbuster Jack Reacher, which took £1.7 million. (Guardian UK)

Box Office: (2nd Week) "The Impossible" scored $485,000 at 15 locations

Directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, the tsunami family drama The Impossible was up an impressive 29% from last weekend according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Starring SAG Award nominee Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, The Impossible added an estimated $185,000 this weekend at 15 locations (the same number of venues as last week). Cume after 10 days: $485,000.

The Impossible is the highest-grossing movie of the year at the Spanish box office: $52.99m, far ahead of the no. 2 movie, Bill Condon’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, starring On the Road‘s Kristen Stewart, alongside Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, which has earned $27.95m.

Also, Juan Antonio Bayona had a previous no. 1 hit at the Spanish box office: the atmospheric psychological / horror drama The Orphanage / El Orfanato, starring Belén Rueda, which scored $37.72m in 2007. And that The Impossible is Spain’s second biggest box-office blockbuster in the last ten years, behind James Cameron / Sam Worthington Avatar, which grossed a gigantic $109.99m in late 2009 / early 2010.
