[BREAKING NEWS] Jude Law joins "Queen of the Desert" which will start shooting in March 2013

Jude Law Joining Werner Herzog's 'Queen of the Desert'

11/2/2012 by Pamela McClintock, THR

He'll star opposite Naomi Watts and Robert Pattinson in the biopic of Gertrude Bell, described as the female Lawrence of Arabia.

Adding another title to its arsenal, Sierra/Affinity will represent foreign rights to Werner Herzog's historical Gertrude Bell biopic Queen of the Desert.

Jude Law is joining the cast of the film, which headlines Naomi Watts as Bell and Robert Pattinson as T.E. Lawrence, otherwise known as Lawrence of Arabia.

Bell -- like Lawrence -- was an explorer, writer, archeologist and attaché for the British Empire, who is credited with helping to catalyze the formation of the Middle East at the dawn of the 20th century. She's often been referred to as the "female" Lawrence of Arabia.

Nick Raslan is producing via his Palmyra Films banner along with Cassian Elwes and Michael Benaroya. Benaroya's Benaroya Pictures banner will finance the film.

Sierra/Affinity will handle international sales and will make it available to buyers during this year's American Film Market.

"It is a great opportunity to be working with such acclaimed talent on such an important project. We look forward to seeing Werner Herzog make this exciting piece of history come alive for a global audience," Sierra/Affinity CEO Jude Law said.

Principal photography is scheduled to begin in Morocco in March 2013.

[Breaking News] Robert Pattinson joins Naomi Watts in "Queen of the Desert"

Aug. 14, 2012

'Twilight' thesp would play young Lawrence of Arabia opposite Naomi Watts

By Jeff Sneider, Variety

Just days before "Cosmopolis" opens in limited release, star Robert Pattinson has joined the cast of Werner Herzog's indie "Queen of the Desert," which will star Naomi Watts as English writer Gertrude Bell.

Pic will chronicle Bell's life as a writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer and political attache for the British Empire. One of the first women to graduate from Oxford at the turn of the 20th century, she traveled through the Middle East, defining the borders of Iraq, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

Pattinson is attached to play T.E. Lawrence, a British Army officer whose writing earned him international fame as Lawrence of Arabia, on whom David Lean's classic 1962 epic is based. Lawrence was a good friend to Bell over the years, as the duo helped establish the Hashemite dynasties in Jordan and Iraq.

Cassian Elwes and Nick Raslan (Herzog's "Rescue Dawn") are producing the pic, which is aiming to start production in late fall.

Outside of the "Twilight" franchise that catapulted him to fame, Pattinson has avoided blockbusters to work on challenging indie projects with acclaimed directors. After wrapping Francis Lawrence's adaptation of "Water for Elephants" and the lusty period pic "Bel Ami," Pattinson chose to work with David Cronenberg on "Cosmopolis," which opens Friday. Thesp is set to star opposite Guy Pearce in David Michod's Aussie drama "The Rover," as well as the indie thriller "Mission: Blacklist," which chronicles the hunt for Saddam Hussein.

Pattinson is repped by WME, 3 Arts Entertainment, Curtis Brown Group and attorney Robert Offer.

[Article] Diana resumes filming at Kensington Palace

Its makers have gone to extraordinary lengths to recreate Diana's style, but is a major new film about her love life TRIBUTE or TRAVESTY?

By Alison Boshoff

3 August 2012

The resemblance is unsettling. Naomi Watts may be shorter and less beautiful but — as she hesitates at a revolving door in white jeans and Cerruti jacket — she is the image of Princess Diana on her last night.

On the face of it, the Oscar-nominated actress appears to be perfect casting for the £20 million movie ‘Diana’, which is due to be released worldwide in February.

Production started a month ago in Trieste, north Italy, which is being used for the Paris scenes. When Watts and Cas Anvar — who is playing Dodi Fayed — are seen arriving at The Ritz, it will actually be Trieste’s historic Palazzo Stratti building, now the offices of an insurance company.

Sources connected with the film say that it centres on Diana’s two-year romance with the surgeon she called Mr Wonderful — Dr Hasnat Khan. Her fatal car crash in the Pont D’Alma tunnel is not being recreated, as it is not the focus of the movie.

[Diana] More on the filming in a stunning blue gown ....

The likeness is electric! Naomi Watts emulates another iconic Princess Diana outfit as she recreates Sydney blue dress look

13 July 2012

She's already stunned after she was spotted giving a first glimpse of her Princess Diana role earlier this week.

And now fans are set to be even more stunned as more pictures of Naomi Watts have been revealed as she continues filming the biopic.

The actress has been shooting scenes for the Diana movie and has now given off an electric blue frock as she emulated one of Diana's iconic Versace looks in a blue gown wore in Sydney in 1996.

Watts could almost be mistaken for Prince Charles' late former wife as she was seen walking along a red carpet in the scene.

Naomi threw herself into the role yet again as she sported blonde cropped hair.

Playlist confirming "Queen of the Desert" expected to start shooting in the Fall

Further to our "first" from-Cannes report on May 19, here below a confirmation by the authoritative "The Playlist":

Watch Out, Ridley: Werner Herzog's Gertrude Bell Film Starring Naomi Watts Hoping To Shoot In The Fall

The Playlist, May 20, 2012

Ridley Scott, eat your heart out. Or, maybe a shoe is more appropriate here? Werner Herzog is set to beat out Scott with his own biopic of famed British explorer Gertrude Bell set to begin production this fall.

The whole rat race began last February when Herzog teamed with with Naomi Watts for "Queen Of The Desert," a "Lawrence Of Arabia"-esque epic based on the life of Bell -- a traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attaché for the British Empire at the dawn of the 20th century. Soon after, though, it was noted that Scott was developing his own biopic of Bell, which had Angelina Jolie eyeing the lead role.

Little else had been heard from Herzog's project since then, but it now seems be moving forward quicker than ever with producer Cassian Elwes (Cannes duo "The Paperboy" and "Lawless") unveiling plans for a fall shoot with Watts still on board. Scott, meanwhile, has "Prometheus" on the brink of a massive summer release, and "The Counselor" due to shoot this summer, but as recently as last week the director expressed hopes to follow the 'Counselor' up with his Bell biopic. Will Herzog's news change things at all? We'll have to wait and see.

Either way, Bell's story is certainly one worth exploring on the big screen: along with T.E. Lawrence, she's credited with playing an instrumental part in the founding of the modern states of Iraq and Jordan, and installing their first rulers, King Abdullah and King Faisal. Renowned for her extensive travels, explorations and mapping of Greater Syria, Mesopotamia, Asia Minor, and Arabia, Bell was also highly regarded by the British government and had a major influence on imperial policy-making -- a very unusual concept at the time considering her gender.

Naomi & Robin Wright are ‘The Grandmothers’ In Anne Fontaine’s Doris Lessing Adaptation

...‘Animal Kingdom’ Star James Frecheville & Xavier Samuel From ‘Twilight: Eclipse’ Also On Board.

Following our Oct 29 report, it is announced today that French helmer Anne Fontaine next to her international breakout film “Coco Before Chanel” will helm “The Grandmothers,” an adaptation of the 2003 novella by Nobel Prize-winner Doris Lessing, scripted by “Atonement” and “Dangerous Liaisons” scribe Christopher Hampton. The story involves two childhood friends and neighbors who each fall in love with the other’s son, to the disgust of the boys’ wives. Naomi Watts and Robin Wright are on board to play the [grand?]mothers, while young “Animal Kingdom” star James Frecheville and Australian actor Xavier Samuel, best known for playing villainous vamp Riley in “Twilight: Eclipse,” will play the sons.

With three Australian actors among the cast, and a shoot planned in the country, it looks like the project’s been transplanted Down Under, with producer Andrew Mason (”Tomorrow, When The War Began”) teaming with French companies Gaumont and Mon Voisin to back the project. It’s all a very impressive collection of talent, so this is certainly something to keep an eye on as 2012 develops. Shooting starts in February.

And yes, it does basically sound like a big-screen version of “Motherlover.” We may have problems getting past that.

BREAKING NEWS: Naomi and Liev join in "The Bleeder" new biopic movie

Naomi Watts, Liev Schreiber, and Christina Hendricks Join the Boxing Biopic THE BLEEDER

by Brendan Bettinger, Collider.com/May 10, 2011

Naomi Watts, Liev Schreiber and Christina Hendricks are set to star in the boxing drama The Bleeder. Per Variety, the film is based on the story of Chuck Wepner, the New Jersey heavyweight boxer who fought 15 rounds with Muhammad Ali and inspired to Sylvester Stallone to write Rocky. The biopic is the natural transition for documentary filmmaker Jeff Feuerzeig (The Devil and Daniel Johnston) to directing narrative features. Feuerzeig co-wrote the script with Jerry Stahl (Bad Boys II).

Studio home Hyde Park International is shopping The Bleeder at the Cannes Film Festival this week along with Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vegneance, The Double, Echelon, and Our Idiot Brother. If I were a billionaire cinephile hanging out in the French Riviera right now, I’d have a hard time passing up the Watts/Schreiber/Hendricks package. Hit the jump for more on Wepner.

Here’s the Wikipedia account of the Wepner/Ali fight:
