The Best Actress category seems pretty lined up already-Natalie Portman, Annette Bening, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lawrence and Michelle Williams. Michelle Williams remains vulnerable and could be bumped if the Academy places Hailee Steinfeld in Lead (which she is) instead of supporting (which she is not, but that’s where young actors are sent). My hope is that come nomination morning we have a huge surprise by a terrific actress who was unfairly overlooked the entire awards season. Naomi Watts delivers a commanding performance in Fair Game, where she plays real life CIA operative Valerie Plame who was outed by members of the Bush Administration. Below I have included a clip of Watts’ fine work where her character finds out that her true identity has been revealed. It is a great piece of acting, deserving of an Oscar nomination.
