Entertainment One has acquired U.S. rights to “Diana,” the Princess Diana movie starring Naomi Watts, from Embankment Films and Ecosse Films.
eOne said it will release “Diana,” — which focuses on the last two years of her life — late this year, indicating that it will probably launch an awards campaign. It also plans major releases in the U.K., Canada and Spain.
Footage was shown to buyers at Cannes last week.
“We are thrilled to be bringing Diana home from Cannes,” said eOne’s Dylan Wiley. “’Diana’ will give audiences worldwide a chance to not only fall in love with the Princess all over again, but also discover a part of her life up until now kept out of the public eye.”
The film is produced by Ecosse Films’ Robert Bernstein and Douglas Rae. “Diana,” directed by “Downfall” helmer Oliver Hirschbiegel, is currently in post-production.
Written by Stephen Jeffreys, the movie explores the Princess Diana’s relationship with heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan, portrayed by Naveen Andrews (“Lost”).
