We asked Schreiber how he drew on his own relationship of five years with actress Naomi Watts, in approaching his character (in his new film "Every Day").
“I think this is something that is familiar to probably any serious couple, which is that sense of distant intimacy. By that I mean, when you spend every waking moment together and yet you’re not really connecting because the whirlwind of your lives and your children and career have somehow put distance between you that isn’t obvious; it’s a distance in intimacy. And when you get the opportunity to rediscover each other, it’s really amazing, and that usually comes with some kind of crisis. That was something that felt very familiar to me.”
Did he ever experience that type of crisis himself? “Yeah, I think both our children being born. You forget how close knit you are with somebody until something like that happens.”
The couple, who acted together in The Painted Veil in 2006, reside in New York (where Schreiber grew up) with their two sons, ages two and three. Another reason Schreiber mentioned he was interested in this role was to have the chance to explore “contemporary notions of masculinity &dmash; those things are always interesting; what is a man’s role?” He also hoped for “some sort of a head start or hints on raising an adolescent boy.”
Schreiber just spent the past few months “watching the kids while Naomi shot a movie about the tsunami in Thailand,” so we bet he’s already got that head start.
