"The Impossible" set for Dec. 21, 2012

Lionsgate has set a Dec. 21 release in the United States for "The Impossible," starring Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, based on a true story during the 2004 tsunami in Thailand.

Studio will launch "Impossible" in Los angeles and New York. Summit Entertainment acquired rights to most worldwide markets in 2010 for the pic, co-produced by Spanish production companies Apaches Entertainment and Telecino Cinema.

Juan Antonio Bayona directed from a script by Sergio G. Sanchez. Producers are Belen Atienza, Lopez Lavigne and Alvaro Augustin.

Summit began selling international markets outside North America (excluding Spain) at Cannes in 2010.
