[Article] Naomi Watts, Anne Fontaine on Forbidden Love in ‘Two Mothers’

Jan 25, 2013

In the new film, “Two Mothers,” actress Naomi Watts plays Lil, a middle-aged Australian woman who, with the help of her best friend Roz (Robin Wright), has raised her teenage son after her husband passed away. Roz’s own son is about the same age, and together their two families enjoy life in a remote seaside town.

In an early scene of “Two Mothers, which premiered this past week at Sundance, Lil and Roz sunbathe while watching their sons ride the waves on their surfboards. “Look at them, they’re like gods,” Roz says, as the camera follows the strapping young men as they command the forces of the sea.

The scene foreshadows the unexpected, some would call forbidden, turn in the lives of these four people. (Again, spoiler warning.) When Roz’s husband is pulled away to Sydney for a career opportunity, the two women and their sons spend more and more time together, eventually leading to secret love affairs between Roz and Lil’s son, and Lil and Roz’s son. Sundance 2013: French director Anne Fontaine's work translates

Anne Fontaine didn't believe 'Two Mothers,' an adaptation of a Doris Lessing novella, would work well in French. So she made her first English language film.

By Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

Jan 24, 2013.

Writer Doris Lessing was 92 years old when French filmmaker Anne Fontaine met her last year, and she made quite an impression.

"She's wild," Fontaine says. "She has a look I'd never seen before: eyes that go into your head, like a fakir, so intense, not hiding anything."

The two women were speaking because Fontaine was going to turn Lessing's novella "The Grandmothers" into a film and the Nobel Prize-winning author had some unexpected advice for adapting her story of two women looking back on their lives.

"She tells me, 'Don't take two old women, 60-year-olds. If you do, women will be against the story. The audience has to envy them in a way, even if it is almost a taboo.'"

Fontaine took Lessing's suggestion, casting Naomi Watts and Robin Wright in "Two Mothers," one of the Sundance Film Festival's more provocative entries. It's the story of what happens when two Australian women, best friends since childhood, take each other's sons as lovers.

"I know this is very provocative. People could be shocked, but I believe in this story," the director says. "This sex, it's like a drug, it's stronger than rationality. It's not normal sexuality, the desire is not classic, not conventional. It's something violent inside, something they can't explain. They don't know where it's going to end." She was forced to bundle up for the cold conditions whilst she was recently in Sundance, leaving little room to experiment with her fashion.

But Naomi Watts once again flirted with her style as she stepped out in balmy Venice Beach on Wednesday.

The 44-year-old actress fitted in with the bohemian crowd by wearing a floaty patterned top and edgy burgundy jeans whilst furniture shopping in the beach side suburb.

The Impossible star accessorised with brown leather ankle boots and a black leather handbag.

The Aussie blonde wore her flaxen locks out in a straight style and shielded her eyes with Aviator sunglasses.

Naomi was enjoying a chance to do some shopping in the midst of a so far busy awards and film festival season.
