At 43 years of age, Naomi Watts could teach a few youngsters about style and elegance, because the talented actress can work an chic ensemble for both the day and the night.

Her wattage is always high, but today there were volts shooting through the J.Edgar star's outfits as she stole the scene on a Manhattan street and later at the city's Tribeca ball.

The mother-of-two opted for the tried and tested city shorts during daylight hours, and teamed them with a simple navy blue T-shirt, vest underlay and off-white trilby.

She added a pair of Ray Bans, flat Mary Jane shoes and an over the shoulder bag, which gave her the air of a effortlessly stylish art student as she sauntered through the city.

But for the evening, Watts was all woman.

The blonde, who was born in Shoreham in Kent, England and raised in Australia, slipped into a darling black velvet dress that cinched her waist perfectly.

This was paired with a fashionable snakeskin clutch, simple yet bold gold necklace and sandals to show off her elegant and ever-so-slightly edgy black toe polish.

She was joined by her partner Liev Schreiber, model Helena Christensen and Mr Popper's Penguins star Carla Gugino and Sex and the City alum,and fellow Brit-born, Kim Cattrall.

The New York Academy of Art hosted the ball to honour Robert De Niro, it was a glittering event - quite literally - as sponsored by jewellers to the A-List Van Cleef and Arpels.

The annual Tribeca Ball is an event to interact with more than 100 of New York’s emerging artists and their work.

Watts, who is working on an untitled film with the Farrelly brothers, is a regular attendee.
