[Article] Naomi Watts: I have demons

14 Dec 2012 Cover Media

Naomi Watts admits her childhood has left her with "demons" to battle.

The actress was born in England and her parents split up when she was four. She was raised by her grandparents, aunts and mother and regularly moved around the country.

Although her parents Myfanwy and Peter eventually reconciled, Peter died of a heroin overdose when Naomi was seven.

The family moved again and eventually Myfanwy decided to relocate them to Australia. The actress is in no doubt her upbringing had a lasting impact on her.

"Yes, there's no question about," she told British newspaper The Times. "I've got demons, and I'm someone who's been accused of presenting myself as a lighter, happy-go-lucky person. And there's possibly, well, some untruth in that."

Golden Globe Nominee Naomi Watts on Her Tsunami-Victim Role—and Abiding Fear of Water

By Bennett Marcus, Vanity Fair

Dec 13. 2012

For The Impossible, the movie about a family caught up in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Naomi Watts spent six weeks in a water tank in Spain. During that difficult period, she did occasionally wonder what the heck she had gotten herself into by taking the role, based on a true story.

“But every time I got to the point where I was about to complain and say, ‘Oh my God, I can’t handle this. Please, no more,’ I remembered, you know, I’m just an actor. I know I’m safe,” Watts said at a screening hosted by Calvin Klein Collection on Wednesday.

“These people had no idea what was going on. And they didn’t know if it was finishing, they didn’t know if they were safe, and they were not able to see their other family members,” she added. “You know, it was wild. So you just go, ‘No, this is nothing compared to what they went through, so buckle up and soldier on and get through it.’”

Naomi Watts Took on 'The Impossible' Through Real Tsunami Victims' Stories

By BOB WOODRUFF and CLAIRE PEDERSEN

Dec. 12, 2012

It started out as an idyllic vacation for a mother, a father and their three young sons on the West coast of Thailand. But the winter holiday soon turned to a living hell -- and an epic fight for survival -- when the young family got caught up in the most devastating natural disaster in modern history.

It was Dec. 26, 2004, when a giant Indian Ocean tsunami swept across Southeast Asia, destroying entire villages and five-star resorts, and killing hundreds of thousands of people.

"The Impossible," which will be in theaters nationwide on Dec. 21, tells the true story, in excruciating detail, of what happened to the Belons, a family who was caught up with millions of people in the disaster.

Naomi Watts plays the mother, Maria, alongside Ewan McGregor, who plays her husband, Henry.

"It just felt like it was rooted in real truth," Watts said. "Every line of dialogue, every detail, everything just felt real, and I had to do it. I knew I wanted to do it from five pages in."

[Article] Nothing is 'Impossible' for Naomi Watts

by Donna Freydkin, USA TODAY

Oh, and she's terrified, understandably so, of dying and leaving her two young sons behind. It all goes back to her childhood. Watts' dad, English road manager and sound engineer Peter Watts, passed away in 1976, when his daughter was 8, and her memories of him are a blank.

So you might wonder why Watts decided to tackle the lead in The Impossible, a grueling, harrowing film that required her to be soaked for six long weeks – and had her playing a real-life woman who gets separated from two of her three sons after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami destroys their resort.

"I was struck by (my character's) sense of courage and heroism. It's deeply impressive. She hates to be thought of that way, by the way. It's so miraculous that her family survives. She came so close to dying and she was certain she would. She had to believe that the last thing she left behind was this message to her son, which was to help others," says Watts, 44, of playing Dr. Maria Belon, who is vacationing in Thailand with her husband (Ewan McGregor) and their trio of boys when the tsunami hits and splits them up.

Naomi talked about her Diana role & biking on the Ellen Degeneres Show on Dec 11, 2012 (video)

[On Diana]

[On biking in NYC]

The British-Australian beauty stopped by The Ellen Degeneres Show to discuss her part in the Oliver Hirschbiegel-directed biopic, appropriately titled Diana, and admitted that portraying the princess was "high pressure."

"I tried to say no, but I guess every time I said no, I rang back up and said I changed my mind," the 44-year-old star explained. "I think it's just the pressure because we all feel we know her so well. The pressure of that is scary because everybody thinks, oh, you're not the right look or whatever…"

But she did sign on and (in our humble opinion) will surely be smashing. So what new information did she learn about Diana during her research? "She had a great sense of humor," Watts weighs in. "And she was kind of a rebel in really good kind of way."

Naomi's night out at Chateau Marmont in Hollywood Dec 9, 2012

Treating herself to an exciting evening out, Naomi  headed over to the popular hotspot Chateau Marmont in Hollywood last night (Dec 9).

The “King Kong” cutie donned a grey winter coat teamed with a pair of Christian Louboutin peep toe ankle boots as she made her exit and hopped into a chauffeured car.

Meanwhile, Naomi recently confessed that her role in the forthcoming biopic “Diana” was as intimidating as it was exhilarating.

"The film focuses on the last two years of her life. It was an experience. It's a high-risk project as well. I was petrified but intrigued. She's a fascinating woman full of complexities and contradictions — all the kinds of women I like to play and surround myself with in real life. She was a rebel. She was very isolated. She didn't trust anyone. It's a fascinating story."

Naomi Watts Says Princess Diana Would Be ‘Overjoyed’ at Kate Middleton's Pregnancy

The royal palace was elated with the news of Kate Middleton‘s pregnancy, but none would be more thrilled with the baby announcement than the late Princess Diana, according to the actress playing her in a forthcoming film, Naomi Watts.

Watts, who did extensive research on the royal family her role in the biopic Diana, said: “the people’s princess” would’ve been “overjoyed” to learn that her 30-year-old son Prince William is now a father-to-be.

“I feel for her,” Watts said of the expecting Duchess of Cambridge. “But she seems like a level-headed girl.”

How does Watts feel about Middleton taking on the media’s coverage of her life in the public eye?

“She probably can handle it,” the 44-year-old Australian actress said while promoting her new film The Impossible. ”Obviously, there’s been some preparation, I’m sure.”

[Article] 2 Mothers will shake up & re-invent Naomi Watts' Career

Watts all the fuss about Naomi's raunchy new role?

The Daily Telegraph
Dec 11, 2012

Two Mothers, which was shot in NSW, features Naomi Watts, Robyn Wright, Xavier Samuel and James Frecheville.

IT'S the movie role Naomi Watts believes will shake up her career.

And the raunchy drama Two Mothers, which was filmed in NSW late last year, looks set to be one of the most controversial releases of the New Year.

Confidential got the first sneak peek at the flick yesterday, which shows the 44-year-old star in bed with Animal Kingdom actor James Frecheville, 21.

"This is going to change things," Watts said. "A career has to be reinvented all the time."

The movie - based on a short story, The Grandmothers - was directed by Anne Fontaine, of Coco Avant Chanel fame.

The plot follows two childhood best friends and neighbours (Watts and Robin Wright) who start sleeping with each other's sons - who are also best mates.

Two Mothers was shot in Seal Rocks, south of Forster on the mid north coast, with an estimated budget of $16 million.

Watts's son is played by Twilight cutie Xavier Samuel.

It was announced at the weekend that the film would premiere at the prestigious 2013 Sundance Film Festival next month in Utah.

Watts recently said it was Fontaine who told her never to have plastic surgery because "you can't relight a strange face".
