By Cassie Carpenter, 6 Jan 2013

She was caked in mud and fake blood, and performed all of her own stunts for The Impossible.

But Naomi Watts was an absolute vision in blue as she attended the Palm Springs Film Festival, where her young co-star Tom Holland presented her with the Desert Palm Achievement Award for the harrowing role on Saturday.

Bringing out her eyes: Naomi Watts was an absolute vision in blue as she attended the Palm Springs Film Festival Saturday night, where she won the Desert Palm Achievement Award for The Impossible.

The 44-year-old thespian, who played a true-life survivor of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, looked like a goddess in her silky Grecian gown.

The British-Australian actress was also seen wearing a chic black leather blazer over her maxi-dress as she posed alongside the remarkable 16-year-old, with whom she spends the entirety of the drama.

It is an account of just one family caught, with tens of thousands of strangers, in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of our time. (....more after the jump)

[Article] Naomi Watts: I can’t fake tan

Jan 5, 2013

Naomi Watts has confessed fake tan “doesn’t work” for her.

The actress explained she has difficulty achieving a smooth, bronzed look all over.

Known for her fair skin and blonde locks, the star often ends up with uneven colour because of her fear of sun damage.

“My legs never match my face. I like brown legs in the summer, but a tanned face is less flattering the older I get, so I’m left looking browner on my bottom half than my top,” she told UK magazine Marie Claire. “My motto is, ‘the less sun the better,’ but fake tans don’t work for me. I always end up with orange streaks.”

Naomi also talked about how her skincare regime has changed over time.

The star explained that as she grows older, her complexion requires more intensely hydrating products.

“As an actress you are forced to think about ageing. I’ve definitely noticed my eyes have started to go and I don’t bounce back like I used to, since turning 44. My skin also feels drier these days, which is why I love Astalift Jelly Aquarysta. It is super-hydrating and I wear it under the Astalift Replenishing Day Cream,” she said.

Now for the first time ever, we're hearing Naomi sings, on ABC news with Popcorn Peter Travers of The Rolling Stone, where she talks about her 2 new films: "The Impossible", and "Diana". Personally I think she sings very well, with good pace and a solid voice.

Naomi Watts on Age and Role Transition

[Tom Long: Detroit News]
While many actresses might fear maturing and growing out of the starlet years, Watts says the transition has been nothing but good for her.

"I feel like the roles have gotten more interesting with age," she says.

"Certainly age brings up fear — anyone who says it's easy, I think might be telling a little fib. It brings up fear, but at the same time there are these great stories to tell of older women who've lived through chunks of life," she says. "It's not just arm candy, it's women who've experienced more.

"The longer the life, the deeper it gets," Watts says. "In terms of being an actor, that's much richer."

[Interview] Naomi Watts: I Love Everything About India

Jan 4, 2013, Rediff.com

In the toughest film in her career so far, Naomi Watts plays a role quite close to home.

The Impossible has her play a mother of three caught in a Tsunami, struggling to keep her family alive and safe.

Being a mother in real life -- Naomi has two children Kai, five, and Sashi, four, with partner Liev Schreiber -- she could feel the pain her character Maria (based on Spanish doctor Maria Belon and her real life account) went through.

Naomi does a fine job of it, in the film, and in her daily life, as she juggles between a busy acting career and her young children.

In this e-mail interview with Ronjita Kulkarni, Naomi talks about her new film, her toughest movies, her trip to India, and the Indian movies she loves.

How difficult was it to play Maria in The Impossible, given that you are scared of drowning? What inner resources did you have to delve into play the role? You have spoken in the past that you reach out to your inner demons when playing parts? The fear of losing your family, for instance, now that you have two young sons and someone like (partner) Liev Schreiber in your life? (...more after jump)

[Excerpt: Jennifer Lawrence on Naomi Watts]

From a Wall Street Journal's interview with young Actress Jennifer Lawrence:

WSJ: The Wall Street Journal: Your "X-Men" role is your first in a costume that transformed your appearance. Did it feel different to act that way?

Ms. Lawrence: The acting is the same but I had to be conscious of my face. I never have before, which I always regret when I'm watching a movie because when I smile you see how huge my cheeks are. But when you're in this makeup, your teeth are fluorescent and if you lift your cheeks too high, your scales go into your eyes. For a time they had me wearing these contacts that were dreadful. They were like eggshells. I could barely see and it seemed like a wall between me and the camera. I admire these actresses who look so beautiful all the time. Naomi Watts. When she cries she still looks gorgeous. When I cry I look like a platypus.

[Jessica Chastain on Naomi Watts]

When Jessica Chastain was replaced by Naomi Watts to star in "Caught in flight" (now "Diana"), she posted a message in Facebook for her fans saying that she has been a fan of Watts for so long since her work in Mulholland Dr. Also she added that she will be very happy to watch the movie and Naomi's work, guess that was very kind of her, and very sweet, and showing her admiration for Naomi's talents.

Maria Belon on racial criticism and casting of Naomi Watts

Belon made this clear when asked if it bothered her that her family was being portrayed by English actors instead of Spanish ones.

“I am fed up with this question all the time,” Belon said quite strongly. “This movie is not about nationalities, not about races, not about colors. It’s about human beings. One of the conditions we put is that there should be no nationality for the family. I don’t care if they would be black, brown or green skin. I wouldn’t care about anything.”

Belon said she was involved in the making of “The Impossible” for several years and that she did have a say in the film’s casting. When Bayona asked Belon who her favorite actress was, she replied Naomi Watts because of her performance in “21 Grams.”

“When I saw her in ‘21 Grams’ I thought (gasp) what is this woman about?” Belon said of Watts’ performance. “When he (Bayona) told me that Naomi is going to portray Maria I was like okay, then I’ll go around the world to the other end and I hide. I don’t want to meet her, I don’t want to disturb her.”

[Article] NAOMI WATTS: I HOPE THE PRINCES LIKE MY DIANA!

31 Dec 2012, Daily Star

HOLLYWOOD babe Naomi Watts is seeking Royal approval for her new starring role in a Princess Diana biopic.

The King Kong star admits she is terrified about how Princes William and Harry will react to her portrayal of their late mum.

Naomi, 44, who was born in Kent but brought up in Australia, says she feels “English at heart”.

Her role in the movie Diana will focus on the final two years of the princess’s life.

It covers the events leading up to Diana’s death in a Paris car crash in 1997, which led to an outpouring of grief around the globe.

The actress said: “I am not just nervous about how Diana’s sons will feel about this film.

“I am also concerned about how the whole country could react because we all have such strong, emotional memories of her death.

“I remember it vividly. I remember shrieking, letting out this almost guttural moan. It was so shocking, such a tragedy.”

The film is set to be released late next year. One reason Naomi was picked for the role is her striking resemblance to the late princess.

Naomi added: “Nobody I can think of has had to deal with the kind of intrusion Diana had to live with.

“There was never a private moment for her.”

Directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, the tsunami family drama The Impossible was up an impressive 29% from last weekend according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Starring SAG Award nominee Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, The Impossible added an estimated $185,000 this weekend at 15 locations (the same number of venues as last week). Cume after 10 days: $485,000.

The Impossible is the highest-grossing movie of the year at the Spanish box office: $52.99m, far ahead of the no. 2 movie, Bill Condon’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, starring On the Road‘s Kristen Stewart, alongside Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, which has earned $27.95m.

Also, Juan Antonio Bayona had a previous no. 1 hit at the Spanish box office: the atmospheric psychological / horror drama The Orphanage / El Orfanato, starring Belén Rueda, which scored $37.72m in 2007. And that The Impossible is Spain’s second biggest box-office blockbuster in the last ten years, behind James Cameron / Sam Worthington Avatar, which grossed a gigantic $109.99m in late 2009 / early 2010.

[Article] Naomi Watts: I Heart Pt. Ravi Shankar

I would like to participate in Aamir Khan’s show: Naomi Watts

- Robin Bansal, Hindustan Times

Dec 30, 2012

If things go as per plans, she may just be the first Hollywood celebrity guest to visit India as we usher in the New Year. But, actor Naomi Watts will have serious things on her mind this time, including the possibility of being on actor Aamir Khan’s issue-based reality show, Satyamev Jayate, that even took him to the cover of the Time magazine.

“I would like to participate in Aamir Khan’s show, which is a fantastic platform, to create awareness about the rehabilitation of Tsunami and earthquake victims. It’s been eight years since this tragedy affected so many lives and many are still suffering. There is a sense of urgency required to create awareness for these victims. And, I was told that Aamir Khan’s show has a huge following in India; I think that’s one way to induce people to come forward and help in their own way,” says the 44-year-old, who will be seen playing the role of a real life Tsunami survivor, Maria Belon in her new flick, The Impossible.

The film is the true story of a Spanish family who faced the natural disaster in 2004 while vacationing in Thailand. The film will hit Indian screens this week and Watts is planning to come to India to promote the same and meet real life Tsunami victims here.

Watts also reveals that she is a huge fan of sitar legend late Pt. Ravi Shankar, and laments that now that he’s no more, she would miss not being able to hear him live.

“A couple of years back, one of my close friends, a huge George Harrison fan, insisted that I listen to one of Pt. Ravi Shankar’s compositions. Even though I had no knowledge about sitar music, I was mesmerised by his composition. That day onwards, I had always been looking for a chance to sit in the audience and watch Pt. Ravi Shankar perform. But when I read about his demise, I realised that I will never be able to see his performance,” she says.

My fear over Diana role: Naomi Watts reveals her concerns about playing Princess of Wales in controversial new film

By Jane Gordon, MailOnline

30 Dec 2012

Naomi Watts’s new film tells the real-life story of one woman’s struggle to survive the Boxing Day tsunami. And, as she tells Jane Gordon, its overriding message is one that’s close to her heart…

For an actress of her stature, Naomi Watts is incredibly small. When she enters the Claridge’s suite in which our interview takes place – still radiantly beautiful at 44 – it is difficult to imagine how someone so tiny (she claims to be ‘5ft 5in in the right heels’ but looks closer to 5ft 2in today in her Tabitha Simmons brogues) can appear so dominant on the big screen.

We meet to talk about her new film The Impossible – a haunting and harrowing true story of a family caught up in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami (directed by the acclaimed Spanish filmmaker J A Bayona), which has earned Naomi a Golden Globe nomination.

But we will chat too about her role as Diana in the controversial film charting the last two years of Princess Diana’s life (which, as yet, has no release date). Both roles have been challenging for Naomi.

In The Impossible she plays Maria, who’s on a Christmas holiday in Thailand with her husband Henry (played by Ewan McGregor) and their three sons.

But their idyllic vacation is savagely interrupted – on 26 December – by the giant waves that caused one of the most devastating natural disasters in recent memory. Separated by the wall of water from her husband and two younger sons – whom she believes to have been killed – Maria and her eldest son Lucas (played by talented newcomer Tom Holland) find each other, and their fight to survive forms the central plot of the film.
