The feature film about Princess Diana's torrid love affair with a heart surgeon will have its world premiere in London just days after the sixteenth anniversary of her death.

Diana, which stars Naomi Watts in the title role, will have a big Leicester Square gala on September 5.

Watts will attend, alongside Naveen Andrews, who portrays Dr Hasnat Khan the Pakistani specialist she used to smuggle into Kensington Palace in the boot of her butler Paul Burrell's car.

The picture focuses, mainly, on how Diana met Hasnat when visiting a friend in hospital.

The film, according to those who have seen an unfinished print, suggests that the doctor was the love of Diana's life.

Indeed, Watts told the Daily Mail the romance between the two unlikely lovers 'was Diana's last stab at happiness'.

She added: 'He didn't want anything, just her.'

But the movie, directed by acclaimed German film-maker Oliver Hirschbiegel, suggests that Diana's desire for Hasnat was insatiable and that she rang him continuously - even when he was in the operating theatre insisting that he take the phone call.

Watts said that she's both 'nervous and excited' about portraying Diana.

'I don't look like her and I'm certainly not impersonating her. I'm hoping to catch the essence of her', the actress said.

The film will go on general release in the UK on September 5 following its September 5 gala and screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival.

I can see what she means. There isn't an immediate resemblance, but through the pictures I've seen she has already captured her essence. Naomi is such a genius of an actress. I'm really supporting this part of hers!
