[NW2005 1stLOOK] Japanese Teaser Trailer & Poster for Naomi Watts' "Diana"

[Article]

A Different View Of Diana

It wouldn’t be surprised if Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Diana does some pretty decent business around the around the world but the difference between a modest profit and an extraordinary box office result is going to come down largely to how effectively the film is marketed in each country. This new Japanese trailer for the film offers not just a few more glimpses of Naomi Watts as Diana but also a look at out how the film will be sold in Japan......

The music, for a start, is different from the trailer released a few weeks ago. That trailer made use of Salvation by Gabrielle Aplin but the Japanese trailer-makers have opted for something much less contemporary, cutting the footage to Jupiter, The Bringer of Jollity from Holst‘s The Planets.

It would be easy to run wild just speculating about those two titles but that may be going a bit far. The use of a classical piece is interesting though in that it evokes something more traditional, something older. The section from Jupiter chosen is also rather triumphant and the trailer has a celebratory feel as a result.

The footage used is similar to the American trailer but there are a few new shots and the way in which these are cut also suggest a different agenda possibly being pushed. There are glimpses in the Japanese Trailer of the newspaper headlines that became such an issue for Diana but the one that we see clearly reads “…Will Not Go Quietly” and is followed by a cut to Naomi Watts fixing her makeup in a mirror before a shot of her face more than filling in the screen. The effect of these images side by side certainly plays well alongside the triumphant music.

Japanese are more sentimental.

If I pick, I would say I like this trailer better.

These trailers look absolutely horrendous. Cringe inducingly bad. I hope, somehow, the movie is decent for Naomi's sake. Watts should have stayed away from a movie about a bi-polar, immature, golddigging bore. No one wants to see a movie about Diana. Any interest or sympathy for her waned years ago, imo.

Same goes for Kidman playing Grace Kelly. An actress who stopped acting eons ago and whom died eons ago. It's a tv movie of the week ffs you're not going to get droves of people into the theater to see that. Kelly's fans are either dead or have dementia.

Then would you say movies about say, Hitler, Jack the Ripper, or Aileen Wuornos - the film that won CHarlize Theron the Oscar, should not have been made, for your argument? coz they were all much worse people than Diana as per public opinions.

The difference is they were all violent people and their uglyness was shown. Look at the movies today; violence sells. If I were financing a movie I would make a movie about them anyday over Diana. If they want to delve into Diana's personality issues that might make it interesting but if they're going to go with the PR, saintly Di, well, what's the point?

One thing that would be worth the price of admission is if they include a scene of the infamous interview. Where Diana makes all her silly faces and talks about Charlie cheating on her with a older, less attractive Camilla. lol. I'd love to see Naomi do that scene. Cuz she would just nail all those faces.

I hope these trailers start looking better and I hope it does well for Naomi's sake.

Everyone has his/her own demons, and good virtues too. I'm sure movies about Hitler before and after after his coming to powers, would be very much different.

Both trailers are fantastic. Thanks.

Evita, in which Madonna played Eva Peron, violent or not, is an absolutely fantastic movie !
